YE Smith is a unique school. Located in the heart of East Durham, YE Smith fosters a caring and supportive learning environment. The staff is extraordinarily committed, and the school has many community partners that help foster an inspiring learning environment. As a museum theme school YE Smith Elementary partners with six local museums: The The Durham History Hub, The Nasher Art Museum, Duke Gardens, Ackland Museum, The North Carolina Museum of Art , and The Museum of Life and Science. Students from Duke's Center for Documentary Studies spent the fall semester documenting YE Smith. Our hope is that this website gives you a glimpse into the commitment, effort and care that brings YE Smith to life.

The Duke class is called Capturing Transience: Documentary Photography and the Digital Age. Childhood is one of the most transient times in our lives, and each Duke student spent the full semester photographing one story. Service Learning at Duke and CDS both provided grants to produce this website. Students provided final prints for a public exhibit for the families and staff. The website and all prints were all donated to the school as a gift with the hope that they support the hard work teachers and staff put in every day to educate the children of Durham.

We are grateful to everyone at Smith: the staff, teachers, children and parents of YE Smith Elementary. Thank you for letting us tell the Stories of Smith!
